Sustainable Sunday at Farm in the City

Community Garden Sun, Apr 28, 2019 12:00 PM

Adult and childhood hunger is an ongoing issue right here in our own community. Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee collects non-perishable food items and redistributes them to community members experiencing hunger. As part of their efforts, Second Harvest works to connect local farmers to those in need, helping to close the farm-to-table loop and create a more food-secure environment for all. That's where we come in, the volunteers. Help us fight hunger in 2019 by working in a local community garden to help care for and harvest a variety of locally-grown crops! Join us and the guys from Roots of a Rebellion for a morning of giving back that will impact those in need in our Nashville community!

As an added bonus, Austin and Marco of Roots of a Rebellion will be performing acoustic music for all the volunteers!

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee opened its doors in 1978 with commitment from several community leaders. The purpose of the organization was to provide a central distribution center for companies, groups and individuals who wished to help provide food for hungry people in Middle Tennessee. Second Harvest's mission is to feed hungry people and work to solve hunger issues in our community. Modeled after the first food bank established in Phoenix in the mid-1970s, Second Harvest was designed to collect food that would otherwise be wasted, inspect and sort this food, and distribute it to soup kitchens, pantries, and shelters serving the hungry. During the first year, this process resulted in a total distribution of 160,000 pounds of food to 75 member agencies.

With more than 1 million Tennesseans at risk of hunger every day, they are working hard to get food to those who need it most. Last year, their fleet of 18 trucks covered more than 750,000 miles rescuing and delivering food to our network of more than 490 partner agencies and directly to hungry children, families and seniors throughout our 46-county service area!

Please note that this event takes place at one of Second Harvest’s partner farms. Therefore, the Food Bank is required to set certain limitations relating to groups that volunteer on the farm. While on the farm, we may be doing a variety of tasks, including crop harvesting, weeding, and much more! Please be prepared to help with several different types of projects.

Belongings: Personal belongings are the responsibility of the owner. Second Harvest asks that volunteers leave personal belongings in their cars whenever possible.
Young Volunteers: Volunteers must be age 7 and up to work on the farm. Groups with volunteers younger than age 18 must be accompanied by adult chaperones. One adult for every five young people (age 7-18) is required.
