Experience a weekend of hiking & camping at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park! This is a special weekend because we will attempt to veiw the Moonbow, a rare atmospheric phenomema when the full moon's light is reflected and refracted off water droplets, which appears as a rainbow over the waterfall in the middle of the night!

Come join us & experience the Moonbow, a rare natural atmospheric phenomena known in Kentucky when the Moon’s light is reflected and refracted off water droplets in the air, usually occurs 2 days before and 2 days after, including the Full Moon if the other conditions are met. The Moonbow happens monthly if the weather, water and astronomical conditions are right.
Once we arrive at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park we will have lunch, setup camp, & dayhike the very scenic Dog Slaughter Falls. Optional dinner at the Riverview Restaurant or campsite (participant choice) Saturday evening. We will have a group campfire after dinner and then head down to experience the Moonbow. Currently it is scheduled to occur 10:30pm – 12:30am EST.  Breakfast Sunday morning at the Riverview Restaurant and return to Nashville. (Meals are not provided).

When: Saturday, March 3, 2018 6:30am CST (Carpool) or 1:00pm EST (Cumberland Falls State Resort Park) to hike. If not hiking come at your leisure, Moonbow occurs 10:30pm – 12:30am EST.

Cost: $10 camping fee, free to day hike

Difficulty: This is a beginner’s trip. The Cumberland Falls viewing area is paved with side trails being loose gravel. The Dog Slaughter Falls dayhike is rated moderate and will be a total of 2.2 miles roundtrip, proper footwear and layers are recommended.
Registration Deadline: Registration closes on Wednesday, February 28th at 3pm.
Group Size Limit: This trip is limited to 18 participants & 2 leaders
Parking: Parking is available for free in the park


Children Policy: This is a 13 and up event. Children 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult and have prior experience hiking strenuous terrain and longer distances
Dog Policy: Friendly dogs who have prior experience hiking 5 miles are permitted,  but must be on leashes per park requirements.
Weather Policy: This trip is drizzle or shine. In the event of severe weather, this trip may be postponed. Participants will be notified of any changes due to weather the week leading up to the event by their trip leader.

Drive time to trailhead from Nashville: About 3 hours 30 minutes with time zone change to park
Hike Distance: Around Cumberland Falls 0.5 miles; if dayhiking Dog Slaughter with group 2.2 total
Estimated Hike Time: Approx. 1.5 - 2 hours

We will meet to carpool at 6:30am CST or Cumberland Falls Resort Park 1:00pm EST (if dayhiking). This will be a car camping trip (please see Team Lightning’s page for more info). Participants are responsible for their own food and gear. We have reserved sites at the Cumberland Falls Resort State Park camping area. A bath house is located in the camping area. Please bring snacks & lunch for Saturday. Saturday evening & Sunday morning optional meals at the Riverview Restaurant or you can bring your own food. After dinner we will hangout at the group campfire, tell stories maybe even a few bad jokes and then head down for the Moonbow. Participants are encouraged to bring layers as the evening could be cold.
