EVENT DETAILS  


Fall is upon us!  Come out and enjoy an early display of fall colors on this Beginner’s Backpacking trip.  Collins Gulf is part of the Savage Gulf natural scenic area, 15,590-acres carved into the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau in Grundy and Sequatchie Counties. The sheer sandstone cliffs and canyons make it one of Tennessee’s most rugged and scenic areas. Gorges feature breathtaking waterfalls.  Expect to see remarkable vistas, waterfalls, wildflowers, and historical locations such as the Stage Coach Road on this trip.

We will begin our Hike at the Collins West trailhead, making our way along the East Rim of the Collins Gulf “CG” trail, with a stunning bird’s eye view of the Savage Gulf natural area.  Along the way, we will stop for snacks and lunch.  As we intersect with the historic Stage Coach Trail “SH,” we will make our descent into the gulf proper, staying at the Sawmill campsite.  In the morning, we will make our way uphill to Collins West, by way of four amazing water features: Schwoon Spring, Fall Creek Cave, Horsepound Falls and Sutter Falls.

Cost: $5 for members & $10 for non-members

Trip Leader: Jerud Colbert & Michelle Guess

Difficulty: This is a beginner’s trip. Distance will be 10.5 miles over the course of two days.  Saturday elevation is rolling terrain, with a drop into the canyon in the evening.  Sunday is uphill, on an easy grade back to the car.

Registration Deadline: Wednesday, October 11th 3:00pm, while spots are available

Group Limit: Limited to 10 participants plus 2 trip leaders

Parking: There is free parking available in the trailhead parking lot

POLICIES

Children Policy: This trip is limited to participants 18 years and up who can handle the mileage and terrain.

Dog Policy: Friendly dogs on leashes with prior hiking experience are welcome.

Weather Policy: This trip is drizzle or shine. In the event of severe weather, this trip may be postponed or cancelled.

TRAIL STATS

Drive time to trailhead from Nashville: About 2 hours with no time zone change

Hike Distance: 5 miles each day

Estimated Hike Time: Approx. 4 hours each day

We will meet at the carpool at 8am CST or trail head at 10am CST. Participants are responsible for their own food and gear. On Saturday you will need to bring snacks, lunch, dinner & water for the trail. Sunday morning you will need a light breakfast and snacks for the hike out. There is a spring at the campsite that will be filtered for group use. Participants are also encouraged to bring a few layers as the evening could be cold.
