The abandoned Marathon Motorworks Factory was going to the weeds when urban visionary Barry Lyle Walker recognized its potential and purchased it in 1986.The project started one building at a time. The oldest, as well as the only two-story building was built circa 1881. Most of the other buildings were built between 1881 and 1912. Because of the different types of architecture involved, the 1988 renovation of the buildings created spaces that are truly unique.

Since then, Walker has overseen development of Marathon Village into a 4-block complex of artist and photographer studios, business offices, Lightning 100 radio station, artisan shops, and a distillery. Lightning 100’s Marathon Village Block Party is an event geared towards celebrating the history of this neighborhood, and the businesses that helped to bring it back to life!
