EVENT DETAILS

Team Green Adventures is a proud parent... of Mill Creek! We officially adopted this one-mile section in the fall of 2013, and are doing our part to remove litter that has built up over the years! This month's clean up effort will focus on a sandbar area with some deeply burried debris (tires, mattresses, shopping carts), while also tackling the 1 mile Mark/Soccer Fields which has become the unfortunate victim of carelessness. Heavy storms will eventually wash all the litter into the creeks, so it's easier to tackle the problem early!

This event is in partnership with Bridgestone Americas' Tires4ward Recycling Program and SweetWater Brewing!

ABOUT CUMBERLAND RIVER COMPACT

The Cumberland River winds for over 696 miles through Kentucky and Tennessee. The land through which it flows is home to some of the greatest biodiversity in the United States. Its course touches 40 counties in Tennessee and 32 in Kentucky, with a combined population of more than 2,000,000. Many of the same water resource problems that plague other regions (need for plentiful water, streambank erosion, sedimentation, nutrients and pathogens) have a foothold here. They work throughout the 18,000 square miles of the Cumberland River Basin to address those problems.

The Cumberland River Compact works to protect the Cumberland River and its tributaries through the education of local residents about its importance and through advocating for policies that will benefit the river and surrounding waterways. The Compact does this through its Adopt A Stream program, which Team Green participates in, as well as through annual events such as the Dragon Boat Festival and the Catfish Rodeo.

WHAT TO EXPECT

No experience necessary! All work is supervised by a Trip Leader, and all equipment and materials are provided. Volunteers will work together to walk the stream collecting trash and debris. Expect to work directly in the water to access the debris. Volunteers should wear work clothes that can get dirty. Closed-toed shoes or durable sandals are required. Work boots, hiking boots, rain boots or old sneakers are great. No flip flops! Please dress appropriately for the weather. Long pants are encourged to protect your legs from getting scratched up.

All tires collected throughout the day from Adopt-a-Stream cleanup efforts will be recycled or repurposed through the Bridgestone Americas' Tires4ward Recycling Program!

ABOUT SWEETWATER BREWING

SweetWater Brewing is the official sponsor of Team Green's waterway cleanups in 2015, which includes three (3) Canoe Float Cleanups and two (2) Mill Creek Cleanups. Protecting our watersways is a cause that SweetWater Brewing holds very close to their hearts, because you can't make good beer without good water! For over a decade they've worked with environtmental groups like the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and Waterkeeper Alliance, and now they're partnering up with Lightning 100's Team Green Adventures! In addition to raising funds and helping to create awareness of the importance of water quality, SweetWater rolled out their Waterkeeper Hefeweizen in 2011.

Each participant who registers for, and attends, each of Team Green's five waterway cleanups in 2015 will have their name added into a random drawing for a Tie-dyed SweetWater Stand Up Paddleboard, which will be given away at the end of August. Also, every Non-Member who signs up to participate in Team Green's waterway volunteer events will receive a complimentary one-year Team Green Adventures Membership, compliments of SweetWater Brewing.

How SWEET is that?!
