ABOUT THE SHOW

Three generations of the Younger family live in a “rat trap” of an apartment in Chicago that they’ve been renting for always. With the passing of the patriarch, a life insurance check of significant value arrives. How will the money best be spent for the benefit of the family? Should a home be purchased, a business venture be invested in, or medical school be paid for? And whose decision is it? Whose dream gets deferred? This American classic was first produced in 1959, and was a pioneering work - the first play written by an African American woman to appear on Broadway.

Nashville Rep exists to serve through creating “Ah-ha!” moments that inspire empathy, prod intellectual and emotional engagement, and expand the creative capacity of audience and artists though the dynamic connection unique to live theatre.

Under René D. Copeland’s guidance the company has advanced its artistic reputation and grown programming with the creation of the REPaloud series as well as the evolution of the Ingram New Works Project, which has featured an array of Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winners as New Works Fellows.

Two years ago the company changed its name from Tennessee Repertory Theatre  to Nashville Repertory Theatre to reflect the community it serves and the source of its talent.
