FROM THE HABITAT NEWSLETTER
With your help we built 29 new homes and changed the lives of 96 family members forever. Here are updates on some of the families who built their homes in 2009:
Timothy Gistover (Fall Community) is currently taking prerequisite classes to prepare him for his master's degree in health education at Tennessee State University. Timothy wants to serve underprivileged communities and says, "I have been helped and now this is my chance to help others. "
Vanessa Drake (Deloitte) recently graduated from the National College of Business and Technology with an associate's degree in business management. She is now taking classes at Nashville State Community College towards a degree in pre-occupational therapy. Monique Gardner (Unity Build) reports her and her children's health has dramatically improved since they moved into her new house. "Our chronic asthma is much better now that we live in a cleaner, safer environment!"
LaSha Tate (Bank of America) said she just wants all of the volunteers to know she and her family are "loving their new home and living in Timberwood."
In addition to the new homes built, six Habitat homes were ReCycled providing 29 family members with a "hand up" and not a "hand out".
Nashville Area Habitat's HomeWORKS provided 1,709 hours of class time for families going through the homeownership program. These classes prepare families for the responsibilities of homeownership. In 2009, the Nashville Area Habitat HomeStores funded four homes and, overall, have funded 12 homes is less than six years of operation.
We would like to leave you with this poem written by Monique Gardner, who built her house with the Unity Build in the fall of 2009:
Here we are gathered together,
Anxious to make bonds we can keep forever.
Before we leave, everyone's story will be told.
It will be a long journey and some hands you might want to hold.
Today is a special day set aside for growth.
Are you wondering whose story will touch you the most?
To be a part of this experience is a wonderful life lesson.
From our hearts we know that this is a blessing.
Our minds fill with joy as it starts to soar,
Remembering the first day we walked through the door!
Heavenly Father above sent you guys to me.
Under angels' wings are where you should be.
Many different people here - many different faces;
All coming from many different places.
Never could we've imagined our dreams would be coming true.
If it wasn't for this program, we wouldn't know what to do.
Today, if you ask me am I happy.
Yes, I would say, because of Habitat for Humanity.
