ABOUT OYSTER ADVENTURE RACE

They Oyster Racing Series started in Denver in 2003. The Oyster name originated in Denver from Rocky Mountain Oysters (a novelty dish popular in the West which includes a "special" part of the bull). The race was dubbed a "rock mountain ball buster" and the name stuck.

The Oyster Race is an adventure race with the same ideas as a wilderness eco challenge/amazing race set along an urban course. The race course is "secret" until the very start of the race when participants receive a "passport" assigning their race tasks. Two mandatory disciplines include running and biking. Additional disciplines may be assigned throughout the race as well, including hiking, paddling, climbing, skating, sit ups, push ups, navigation, use of public transportation and some surprises. Past surprises in other cities have included riding a roller coaster, eating a bug, puring the perfect pint, and more. All gear is provided for race participants except for running shoes and bikes.

Required Equipment

  • Running shoes
  • Bikes for at least 3 race participants
  • Bike helmets for all race participants
  • 1 cell phone
  • 1 small first aid kit
  • 1 digital camera (or camera phone)
  • Some cash ($10-$20)

Logistics

At least 3 race participants must be on the course at the same time. Your 3 person team must complete the requirements of the passport together. On a Relay Team, non-racing participants can take a breather and prepare for the next leg of the race. Each Team will have a "transition area" where you can strategize, refresh, relax, stretch, and chant. After each leg of the race, your team members return to your team transition area to receive your next passport.

Pledges

Oyster Races give back. All money raised benefits a local non-profit: The Nashville Greenways (this also gives a hint as to where some of the course may take place). Each team is required to raise at least $100, which gains you entry into the after party. Additional monies raised gains you valuable Oyster Perks including Course Clues, Rochafellers (free pass for a Team Member to sit out in a particular activity of a race), and gift certificates from Oyster Sponsors.

Training

Come out to the Oyster Bingo Boot Camp for a 90 minute race trial and check out the Sample Course. As a team, think of all the places in Nashville a group of "out-of-towners" would want to visit, then strategize the best way to get to those places by bike, foot, public transportation, and waterway from the Country Music Hall of Fame Park. Bike together, run together (maybe rope yourself together), swim together, paddle together, excersize together. If one of your team members is not as strong at a particular activity, figure out the best way to help them out.

More information can be found in the Official Race Rules and Team Packet.
