On Friday, April 20th, Nashvilllians will have a chance to commute in canoes to work (canoe-t) proving that there are opportunities for alternative modes of transportation utilizing one of the city’s greatest assets- the Cumberland River. Although regularly canoe-ting to work is not a practical option for downtown workers, the event will heighten awareness that the river should be embraced for the recreation and transportation it can provide. In addition to decreasing air pollution, canoe-ting to work also provides a healthy activity that can easily be placed into a busy schedule before and after work. Participants will meet at the Shelby Bottoms boat ramp at 7:00am with their boats in hand ready to embark on the Cumberland River, heading downstream to Riverfront Park. The canoe’ters will arrive at Riverfront Park boat dock in downtown Nashville at 8am and hot coffee and muffins will be on hand from Sweet 16 Bakery. Then after a day's work, the canoe’ters will return to Riverfront Park at 4:30pm where they can either canoe upstream back to Shelby Park or take a boat taxi back to the start. The event is free and open to the public; however, all participants must provide their own boats, paddles, and life jackets. Paddling experience is required. Coffee and muffins from Sweet 16 Bakery and security for the boats will be provided.
